Organization description:

Sea Shepherd Conservation Society – the most aggressive, determined, active, and effective defender of marine wildlife in the world today – has been on the forefront of marine protection since 1977. Our conservation patrols are led by Sea Shepherd Founder and President Captain Paul Watson and are crewed by dedicated volunteers from around the world.

Neptune’s Navy, our fleet of conservation vessels, includes our flagship the R/V Farley Mowat (50-meter ice-strengthened conservation research vessel) and the Sirenian (a 32-meter fast patrol vessel).

From protecting minke, humpback and fin whales in the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary, exposing the dolphin slaughter in Japan, defending baby seals off of the east coast of Canada, and patrolling the Galapagos Marine Reserve, our direct action and documentation has saved hundreds of thousands of lives of marine wildlife worldwide and brought unparalleled international attention to their plights.

Your support is our most valued asset. Your contributions help keep our ships fueled and active on the high seas protecting endangered whales, dolphins, and seals!

They depend on us for protection – we depend on you to get us there.

Description of the problem:

Every year in defiance of international laws and regulations the Japanese whaling fleet illegally slaughters approximately a 1000 whales in the Antarctic whale sanctuary. In addition to sperm whales they target the endangered humpback and fin whales. Sea Shepherd is the only organization in the world with the will to directly intervene in order to enforce international conservation laws and regulations already on the books.

Description of the project/solution:

Sea Shepherd is seeking funding in order to purchase a newer ship so that we can go back down to the Antarctic Whale Sanctuary and Defend the gentle giants that are being slaughtered for profit. The oceans are dying in our time and we will not stand by while this happens. We as an organization will enforce the U.N. Charter for Nature, which gives us the authority to intervene in this extremely cruel and horrific practice.

Last year we were successful in saving 85 whales, but our ship was unable to keep up with them for more than 15 days. This year with a faster ship we plan on shutting down the illegal killing of whales in the sanctuary for good.
